Standing with Esther: early-stage lung cancer treatment costs

Esther is facing early-stage lung cancer and the cost of treatment, travel and care at home is far beyond what the family can cover.

In July I was diagnosed with early-stage lung cancer. My oncology team at Kampala Regional Medical Center has planned 10 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in October. I was told to expect about 5 weeks away from work. I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 24, I worked as a nurse until July, and I have been the main earner for my household. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to Kampala Regional Medical Center 3 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly. My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries. Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment. Where the $1,150 goes: • Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $680 • Scans and lab work: $175 • Transport to Kampala Regional Medical Center: $70 • Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $70 • Household costs while unable to work: $155 With deep gratitude, Esther
