Plant 2,250 native trees around the Liberty canal in Yonkers
Volunteers are restoring the Liberty canal in Yonkers; $2,650 covers saplings, tools and waste removal.

The Liberty canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This May, 38 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 62 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the city parks department, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $2,650 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $1,450
• Tools and protective gear: $500
• Waste removal and skip hire: $570
• Signage and educational materials: $130
Glad we found this place.

Thanks for sharing this, Raymond. Gave what I could, wish it was more. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected.
Sending good thoughts, Raymond. Projects like this are what make a place worth living in. We had a similar scare last year, I know what it feels like.
Hope it all works out, Raymond. Looking forward to the next update.
