In July I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. My oncology team at London Cancer Centre has planned 12 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in September. I was told to expect about 7 weeks away from work.
I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 35, I worked as a taxi driver until July, and I have been the main earner for my household.
Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to London Cancer Centre 5 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly.
My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries.
Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment.
Where the $8,600 goes:
• Household costs while unable to work: $1,700
• Scans and lab work: $530
• Transport to London Cancer Centre: $890
• Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $5,480
I never thought I'd be the one asking, and I'm grateful for every bit of support.
