The Community Pantry pantry in Dar es Salaam is running low just as demand rises; $350 will stock it for 11 weeks.

Dar es Salaam
Since 2021, our volunteer team has run Community Pantry every Wednesday from the back of the old library basement. We started with 21 families, and now we feed 176 each week. Donations have dropped by about 43% this harvest gap, while the line has grown every single week. We rely on volunteers - 6 of us - and keep no salaries or overhead. I buy staples at wholesale prices at the Dar es Salaam market and keep every receipt. Each $5 feeds a family of four for a week. I'll post the weekly shopping receipts and a photo of the shelves each Sunday. Where the $350 goes: • Rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale): $165 • Fresh vegetables and fruit: $80 • Baby formula and diapers: $90 • Refrigeration and electricity: $15 If you can't give, please share this page. It does reach people. - Sarah

  • Praying for you. More neighborhoods should do this. My late mom used to say help given quietly counts double. Blessings.

    • Praying for you, Sarah. I hope things turn around soon.

      • is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Sarah

        • Sure. The biggest one is rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale), $165. The rest is in the list at the bottom of the post and I'll upload receipts as I pay each one. Happy to explain more.

      • thinking of you, Sarah. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. Take care

        • I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. I told my book club about it and three of them are giving too. Thinking of Dar es Salaam.

          • Hope it all works out, Sarah. I hope things turn around soon. My daughter saw me on my phone and now she wants to give her pocket money. Blessings.

            • Wishing you peace. Projects like this are what make a place worth living in. After 14 years in retail I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Greetings from Malang.

              • this could happen to any of us. I have a 11 year old who wants to send good wishes too. Blessings

                • you're not alone. Shared this with my family. After 18 years in farming I know how hard it's to ask for anything

                  • So sorry you're going through this. Great idea, hope you get there. All the best.
