Restoring the Unity wetland: a volunteer-led project in Leicester
Volunteers are restoring the Unity wetland in Leicester; $1,600 covers saplings, tools and waste removal.
🇬🇧 United Kingdom2,209 views
The Unity wetland has been used as an informal dump for years. This May, 88 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 44 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the district council, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $1,600 goes:
• Waste removal and skip hire: $210
• Signage and educational materials: $270
• Native saplings and stakes: $1,120
I hope life is good to you.

Updates from Lydia
Good news. Because of your gifts ($483 in total) I made the first payment toward native saplings and stakes. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

So sorry you're going through this. Great idea, hope you get there. I told my book club about it and three of them are giving too.
Hope this works out for you. Greetings from Nashik.
I hope things turn around soon. After 19 years in accounting I know how hard it's to ask for anything
Keep going, Lydia. It takes guts to ask. Well done. Greetings from Nizamabad.
