Laparoscopic endometriosis surgery for Akello: covering what insurance won't

After a herniated spinal disc, Akello was cleared for laparoscopic endometriosis surgery, but the bill is more than we can manage.

In January I was diagnosed with a herniated spinal disc. My surgeon at Arusha Orthopedic Institute recommended laparoscopic endometriosis surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for April. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $1,250, and after what the government subsidy will pay, I'm still $1,000 short. Doctors at Arusha Orthopedic Institute told me a herniated spinal disc will get worse without laparoscopic endometriosis surgery. I work as a delivery rider, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $1,250 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a delivery rider have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Rehabilitation is expected to take about 6 weeks. I'll not be able to walk without help during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $1,000 goes: β€’ Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $480 β€’ Physiotherapy sessions: $60 β€’ Hospital stay (2 nights): $400 β€’ Travel and lodging for the family: $60 Ask me anything below before you decide. I'd rather you were sure. - Akello

Updates from Akello

  1. Quick update: $137 raised so far (14%). we've booked the dates and paid the deposit. Receipts coming as soon as I have them.

  2. Wanted to say thank you properly. 4% funded and I made the first payment toward surgeon and anesthesia fees.

  3. Good news. Because of your gifts ($27 in total) I made the first payment toward physiotherapy sessions. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  • Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Akello

    • It's all in the list in the story. surgeon and anesthesia fees is the big one at $480, I'll post a receipt when it's paid. I'll keep the page updated.
