Shakil was diagnosed with a cleft palate needing repair in August. The surgeon at Dhaka General Hospital recommended laparoscopic cyst removal, and He is scheduled for October. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $1,150, and after what the government subsidy will pay we're still $850 short. my brother has been in and out of Dhaka General Hospital since August. The doctors say a cleft palate needing repair will get worse without laparoscopic cyst removal. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $1,150 is more than we can find. While we wait, Shakil struggles with daily life and can't work a full shift. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Rehabilitation is expected to take about 5 weeks. During that time Shakil won't be able to work a full shift, so the costs keep growing. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $850 goes: • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $440 • Hospital stay (5 nights): $250 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $55 • Post-operative medication: $25 • Physiotherapy sessions: $50 • Travel and lodging for the family: $30 I hope life is good to you.

  • Praying for you. I work in healthcare and wanted you to know people are on your side. Thinking of Dhaka.

    • good luck, Mousumi. Looking forward to the next update. Put this on a community board in Jinja this morning.

      • Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Shakil!

        • Sure. The biggest one is surgeon and anesthesia fees, $440. The rest is in the list at the bottom of the post and I'll upload receipts as I pay each one. Fair thing to want to know.

          • I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. After 28 years in accounting I know how hard it's to ask for anything.

            • Sending strength, Mousumi. Shared it with a few friends. Wish I lived closer to Nairobi so I could bring a meal. All the best.

              • Good luck. Everyone deserves a bit of help sometimes. After 6 years in customer support I know how hard it's to ask for anything. God bless.
