Justice shouldn't depend on a bank balance: Mirjam's family reunification petition
A family reunification petition deadline is approaching and Mirjam can't afford the lawyer.
🇳🇱 Netherlands1,537 views
I'm facing a family reunification petition. My hearing is scheduled for October, and the filing fees and the lawyer's retainer come to $1,600. I have been told by three legal-aid offices that their waiting list is longer than my deadline.
I have all of my paperwork ready, and my caseworker at a local immigrant rights clinic has confirmed that my case is valid.
If I miss the deadline I could lose my right to stay with my family and my job. My children were born here and this is the only home they know.
I'll share any non-sensitive updates as the case moves along.
Funds cover only the filing fees, translations and attorney retainer.
Where the $1,600 goes:
• Certified translations and document copies: $80
• Attorney retainer: $1,450
• Court-appointed interpreter and travel: $70
With deep gratitude,
Mirjam

Keep going, Mirjam. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did.
Keep going, Mirjam. This could happen to any of us. Wish I lived closer to Jakarta Selatan so I could bring a meal. Greetings from Addis Ababa.
sending strength, Mirjam. Shared this with my family. It's not much but it's yours. Take care.
You're not alone. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. Our whole street has been following this since the weekend. All the best.
Shared this with my family. Read this on the bus and kept thinking about it all day. Thinking of Rotterdam
