Help me pay for valve repair surgery at Saint Matthew Hospital

After endometriosis requiring surgery, Lucy was cleared for valve repair surgery, but the bill is more than we can manage.

In August I was diagnosed with endometriosis requiring surgery. My surgeon at Saint Matthew Hospital recommended valve repair surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for December. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $10,250, and after what the government subsidy will pay, I'm still $5,150 short. Doctors at Saint Matthew Hospital told me endometriosis requiring surgery will get worse without valve repair surgery. I work as a school bus driver, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $10,250 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a school bus driver have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. The recovery period is expected to take about 7 weeks. I'll not be able to look after the children alone during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. The money goes straight to the treatment bills, and I'll share the invoices as they're paid so you can see exactly what your gift did. Where the $5,150 goes: • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $2,200 • Hospital stay (3 nights): $1,650 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $510 • Post-operative medication: $195 • Physiotherapy sessions: $370 • Travel and lodging for the family: $225 Thanks for reading all this.

Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Lucy!

The list at the bottom is the whole picture. surgeon and anesthesia fees is the biggest at $2,200. Good question.

    • You're not alone, Lucy. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier.

      • shared this with my family. My late mom used to say help given quietly counts double. All the best.
