Johannesburg
Elmarie was diagnosed with early-stage lung cancer in January. The oncology team at the Johannesburg Oncology Institute has planned 8 rounds of treatment, starting in April. She will be away from work for about 5 weeks. Elmarie is 44, worked as a nurse until January, and has always been the one who looks after everyone else. Now it's our turn to look after her. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, trips to the Johannesburg Oncology Institute 4 times a week, and the income the family has lost add up quickly. We've already sold what we could and have begun borrowing for groceries. Every kindness from you takes weight off her shoulders. Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment. Where the $3,000 goes: • Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $2,050 • Scans and lab work: $240 • Transport to the Johannesburg Oncology Institute: $170 • Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $150 • Household costs while unable to work: $390 I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to.

  • Best of luck, Thulani. This could happen to any of us. We lost years of savings to something like this so I get it. Take care.

    • Wishing you peace, Thulani. Get well soon. I hope April is when things finally get easier. God bless.

Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Elmarie!

Sure. The biggest one is chemotherapy and medication not covered, $2,050. The rest is in the list at the bottom of the post and I'll upload receipts as I pay each one. I'll keep the page updated.

      • Praying for you. Hope the doctors have good news. Wish I lived closer to Olinda so I could bring a meal.

        • This could happen to any of us. Don't give up. Greetings from Tarragona.

Sending good thoughts. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. Put this on a community board in Latina this morning. Thinking of Johannesburg.

            • Gave what I could, wish it was more. After 8 years in nursing I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Thinking of Johannesburg

              • Sending good thoughts. I work in healthcare and wanted you to know people are on your side. My neighbor in Syracuse donated after I showed her your page. God bless.
