Clean water and shade for Durgapur: restoring the Unity canal
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Unity canal needs $250 for saplings and equipment.
🇮🇳 Durgapur, West Bengal, India1,211 views
The Unity canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This June, 108 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 84 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the city parks department, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
Funds buy saplings, gloves, bags, hire of a skip, and signage.
Where the $250 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $80
• Tools and protective gear: $70
• Waste removal and skip hire: $65
• Signage and educational materials: $35

gave what I could, wish it was more. We had a similar scare last year, I know what it feels like. Take care
Hang in there, Manisha. Projects like this are what make a place worth living in. I hope August is when things finally get easier.
