A solar-powered water pump: a volunteer-led effort in Varanasi

For five years the neighborhood has asked for a solar-powered water pump. This year a group of 30 volunteers, including local mothers, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Baobab community hall, but no funding. We have received donated soil and plants, and the remaining cost is $450. It will serve about 529 people, including local farmers and market traders. We'll hold a build day in October and everyone is invited. We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos. All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance. Where the $450 goes: • Materials: $340 • Permits and inspections: $35 • Safety equipment and signage: $15 • Tools hire and delivery: $60 I hope life is good to you.
