A free library and reading room: a volunteer-led effort in Sacramento
A community-led a free library and reading room at the Freedom community hall that will serve 502 neighbors.

For twelve years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 20 volunteers, including a retired civil engineer, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Freedom community hall, but no funding.
We have received donated paint, and the remaining cost is $2,400.
It will serve about 502 people, including local farmers and market traders. We'll hold a build day in November and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
Funds are spent only on materials, permits and safety equipment; all labor is volunteered.
Where the $2,400 goes:
• Safety equipment and signage: $210
• Permits and inspections: $140
• Materials: $2,050
