A free library and reading room: a volunteer-led effort in Columbia

Volunteers in Columbia are raising $4,000 for a free library and reading room at the old Jacaranda bus depot.

For eight years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 25 volunteers, including local mothers, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the old Jacaranda bus depot, but no funding. We have received donated a pump, and the remaining cost is $4,000. It will serve about 527 people, including local farmers and market traders. We'll hold a build day in May and everyone is invited. We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos. All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance. Where the $4,000 goes: • Materials: $2,900 • Permits and inspections: $300 • Safety equipment and signage: $360 • Tools hire and delivery: $440 I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to.
