I coached boxing at San Francisco Oakwood Community Club from 1981 to 1998. Most of my players were between 12 and 16, and a lot of them turned into friends for life.
Winning was never the point, though I won't pretend I didn't enjoy it. I kept a jar of spare pencils on my desk.
