I coached cross country at Barcelona Stonebridge Swimming Club from 2000 to 2018. Most of my players were between 10 and 15, and a lot of them turned into friends for life.
Winning was never the point, though I won't pretend I didn't enjoy it. I kept a jar of spare pencils on my desk.
