Valve repair surgery for Lộc: covering what insurance won't
After an aortic valve defect, Lộc was cleared for valve repair surgery, but the bill is more than we can manage.

Lộc was diagnosed with an aortic valve defect in September. The surgeon at Hồ Chí Minh City General Hospital recommended valve repair surgery, and He is scheduled for November. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $1,400, and after what our health plan will pay we're still $850 short.
my husband has been in and out of Hồ Chí Minh City General Hospital since September. The doctors say an aortic valve defect will get worse without valve repair surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $1,400 is more than we can find.
While we wait, Lộc struggles with daily life and can't walk without help. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there.
Recovery is expected to take about 5 weeks. During that time Lộc won't be able to walk without help, so the costs keep growing.
I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section.
Where the $850 goes:
• Post-operative medication: $30
• Hospital stay (2 nights): $320
• Pre-operative tests and imaging: $95
• Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $405
