Cláudio was diagnosed with an aortic valve defect in October. The surgeon at Petrópolis General Hospital recommended hip replacement surgery, and He is scheduled for January. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $3,600, and after what our health plan will pay we're still $1,800 short. my brother has been in and out of Petrópolis General Hospital since October. The doctors say an aortic valve defect will get worse without hip replacement surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $3,600 is more than we can find. While we wait, Cláudio struggles with daily life and can't drive. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Recovery is expected to take about 10 weeks. During that time Cláudio won't be able to drive, so the costs keep growing. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section.
