When my hours were cut in half in August, Zakaria fell 3 months behind on rent. Last Thursday a notice to vacate was taped to the door, and the amount owed is $550.
The landlord was understanding for a while, but has now been clear: if the arrears aren't cleared by December, the family must leave.
There are two young children at home. Moving would mean new schools, a new commute and no deposit to put down anywhere else.
Zakaria has started working extra hours at a market stall, and is applying for help from local services, but nothing will arrive in time without the rest of the gap covered here.
Funds go to the landlord and nowhere else. Any amount left over after the arrears are cleared will go toward next month's rent.
Where the $550 goes:
• Rent arrears (3 months): $350
• Late fees and court costs: $60
• Utilities in arrears: $30
• First month of rent as a buffer: $110
