Restoring the Pioneer canal: a volunteer-led project in Berlin
Volunteers are restoring the Pioneer canal in Berlin; $1,400 covers saplings, tools and waste removal.
🇩🇪 Berlin, Berlin, Germany1,240 views
The Pioneer canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This January, 55 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 130 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the municipal water board, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
Funds buy saplings, gloves, bags, hire of a skip, and signage.
Where the $1,400 goes:
• Waste removal and skip hire: $730
• Native saplings and stakes: $440
• Signage and educational materials: $230
With deep gratitude,
Kevin

Rooting for you. Hope the build day goes well, wish I lived closer. I went through something like this 6 years ago and strangers helped me out. Blessings.
