Restoring the Harmony riverbank: a volunteer-led project in Shubra
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Harmony riverbank needs $250 for saplings and equipment.
🇪🇬 Shubra, Cairo, Egypt729 views
The Harmony riverbank has been used as an informal dump for years. This October, 93 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 113 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the municipal water board, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $250 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $115
• Tools and protective gear: $75
• Waste removal and skip hire: $45
• Signage and educational materials: $15
Thank you for reading my story.

Wishing you peace, Marwan. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. Greetings from Quezon City.
Sending love. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. My late mom used to say help given quietly counts double. Thinking of Shubra.
Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Marwan.
It's all in the list in the story. native saplings and stakes is the big one at $115, I'll post a receipt when it's paid. Thanks, that means a lot.
Thinking of you. Hope the build day goes well, wish I lived closer. After 28 years in customer support I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Blessings.
How is Marwan doing now?
Hope it all works out. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. This is the second need I've supported on here and the first that made me cry. Love from Sheffield
Thanks for sharing this, Marwan. This could happen to any of us. Read this on the bus and kept thinking about it all day
Keep going. Great idea, hope you get there. I hope January is when things finally get easier
Praying for you. Gave what I could, wish it was more. My father had a similar thing happen so this one hit home. Greetings from Coyoacán.
Your post was clear and honest. I hope January is when things finally get easier. Thinking of Shubra.

So sorry you're going through this, Marwan. Looking forward to the next update. We're a small family in Québec but we're thinking of you.
