Restoring the Acacia hillside: a volunteer-led project in Newcastle
Volunteers are restoring the Acacia hillside in Newcastle; $1,150 covers saplings, tools and waste removal.
Anywhere in the world1,826 views
The Acacia hillside has been used as an informal dump for years. This September, 58 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 102 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the city parks department, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $1,150 goes:
• Tools and protective gear: $370
• Signage and educational materials: $220
• Waste removal and skip hire: $560
You're what makes this possible, and I'll never forget it.

Best of luck, Sharon. Shared this with my family. This is the second need I've supported on here and the first that made me cry. All the best.
Thanks for sharing this, Sharon. Looking forward to the next update. We had a similar scare last year, I know what it feels like. Take care.
