Plant 3,900 native trees around the Unity wetland in Oakland
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Unity wetland needs $1,250 for saplings and equipment.
🇺🇸 Oakland, California, United States442 views
The Unity wetland has been used as an informal dump for years. This July, 81 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 87 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the municipal water board, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $1,250 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $610
• Waste removal and skip hire: $390
• Tools and protective gear: $250
Thank you so much.

Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Nova.
Native saplings and stakes is $610 of it. Everything else is listed in the story and nothing outside that list comes out of this page. I'll keep the page updated.
