Mthunzi was diagnosed with an aortic valve defect in July. The surgeon at Johannesburg Regional Medical Center recommended a craniotomy, and He is scheduled for October. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $1,650, and after what my employer's plan will pay we're still $1,000 short. my father has been in and out of Johannesburg Regional Medical Center since July. The doctors say an aortic valve defect will get worse without a craniotomy. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $1,650 is more than we can find. While we wait, Mthunzi struggles with daily life and can't look after the children alone. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Recovery is expected to take about 5 weeks. During that time Mthunzi won't be able to look after the children alone, so the costs keep growing.
