In September I was diagnosed with stomach cancer. My oncology team at the Johannesburg Oncology Institute has planned 4 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in November. I was told to expect about 5 weeks away from work. I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 32, I worked as a construction supervisor until September, and I have been the main earner for my household. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to the Johannesburg Oncology Institute 3 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly. My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries. Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment. Where the $2,700 goes: • Household costs while unable to work: $530 • Transport to the Johannesburg Oncology Institute: $195 • Scans and lab work: $350 • Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $1,625 Please ask me anything in the questions section.
