After a hip fracture that never healed properly, Mi-young was cleared for cataract surgery, but the bill is more than we can manage.

In July I was diagnosed with a hip fracture that never healed properly. My surgeon at Oakland Regional Medical Center recommended cataract surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for October. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $8,500, and after what my employer's plan will pay, I'm still $6,300 short. Doctors at Oakland Regional Medical Center told me a hip fracture that never healed properly will get worse without cataract surgery. I work as a restaurant cook, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $8,500 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a restaurant cook have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Recovery is expected to take about 6 weeks. I'll not be able to lift anything heavy during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $6,300 goes: • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $1,700 • Hospital stay (5 nights): $2,750 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $620 • Post-operative medication: $270 • Physiotherapy sessions: $590 • Travel and lodging for the family: $370 I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to. - Mi-young
