In May I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. My oncology team at the Pretoria Oncology Institute has planned 10 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in July. I was told to expect about 8 weeks away from work. I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 24, I worked as a tailor until May, and I have been the main earner for my household. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to the Pretoria Oncology Institute 2 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly. My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries. Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment. Where the $2,200 goes: • Scans and lab work: $480 • Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $880 • Transport to the Pretoria Oncology Institute: $200 • Household costs while unable to work: $640 Thank you for reading my story.

  • hope the doctors have good news. After 13 years in public service I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Take care
