Dignity in old age: caring for Santiago
Santiago, 75, needs daily care to stay at home, and the family is raising $2,700 for a carer and medicines.

I'm caring for my father, who's 75. After a stroke last July Santiago can no longer manage alone. A nursing home would cost far more than we have, and Santiago desperately wants to stay at home.
I work 25 hours a week and have cut back to look after him, but we need a part-time carer.
Santiago worked all of his life as a carpenter, and raised 5 children. Now we're trying to give some of that care back.
Medication, a hospital bed and a carer for four months will make a huge difference.
Funds cover the carer's wages, medicines, a hospital bed rental and incontinence supplies.
Where the $2,700 goes:
• Mobility aids and bathroom adaptations: $400
• Part-time carer (four months): $1,800
• Hospital bed and mattress rental: $500
