Dignity in old age: caring for Gerald
Gerald, 93, needs daily care to stay at home, and the family is raising $250 for a carer and medicines.

I'm caring for my father, who's 93. After a heart attack Gerald can no longer manage alone. A nursing home would cost far more than we have, and Gerald desperately wants to stay at home.
I work 25 hours a week and have cut back to look after him, but we need a part-time carer.
Gerald worked all of his life as a seamstress, and raised 2 children. Now we're trying to give some of that care back.
Medication, a hospital bed and a carer for three months will make a huge difference.
The carer will be employed through a registered agency and paid directly. I'll share the agency invoices.
Where the $250 goes:
• Medication and prescriptions: $70
• Hospital bed and mattress rental: $45
• Mobility aids and bathroom adaptations: $135
