I'm writing for my neighbor Thabisa, who's 78. Thabisa lives alone in Johannesburg, and lost a son last year. The nearest family lives a long flight away. Thabisa loves birdwatching, and would enjoy someone to chat with. An hour a week, perhaps on Sunday afternoon, would mean the world. We can also arrange a phone call if you can't visit in person. All visitors will be introduced by me and I'll be there at the first meeting. I'll share references and, if you'd like, a short orientation from the local befriending charity. No special skills are needed - just kindness and patience. I never thought I'd be the one asking, and I'm grateful for every bit of support.

  • Sending good thoughts. Looking forward to the next update. My mother had a similar thing happen so this one hit home. Take care.

    • thinking of you and your family, Mpho. Wishing Thabisa a smooth procedure and a full recovery. Love from Eindhoven.

      • Thinking of you and your family. Look after yourselves too, caregivers need rest

        • take care, Mpho. Hope the treatment goes smoothly and recovery is quick. Put this on a community board in Haifa this morning.

          • Hope it all works out, Mpho. Hope the treatment goes smoothly and recovery is quick. I told my book club about it and three of them are giving too. All the best.

I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. We lost years of savings to something like this so I get it. Thinking of Johannesburg.

              • Sending good thoughts, Mpho. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. After 23 years in nursing I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Greetings from Medellín

                • Rooting for you, Mpho. I hope things turn around soon. Read this on the bus and kept thinking about it all day. Greetings from Campinas
