A sensory garden for children with autism: a volunteer-led effort in Recife
A community-led a sensory garden for children with autism at Unity Primary School that will serve 278 neighbors.

For twelve years the neighborhood has asked for a sensory garden for children with autism. This year a group of 16 volunteers, including local mothers, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for Unity Primary School, but no funding.
We have received donated tools, and the remaining cost is $700.
It will serve about 278 people, including young people who have nowhere safe to play. We'll hold a build day in July and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
Funds are spent only on materials, permits and safety equipment; all labor is volunteered.
Where the $700 goes:
• Permits and inspections: $45
• Safety equipment and signage: $130
• Materials: $525
Glad we found this place.
