A community garden: a volunteer-led effort in Colombo

For ten years the neighborhood has asked for a community garden. This year a group of 24 volunteers, including the parish youth group, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Liberty health centre yard, but no funding. We have received donated a pump, and the remaining cost is $450. It will serve about 402 people, including elderly neighbors living alone. We'll hold a build day in April and everyone is invited. We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos. All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance. Where the $450 goes: • Materials: $280 • Permits and inspections: $55 • Safety equipment and signage: $25 • Tools hire and delivery: $90 Even a small gift gets used right away and I'll thank you myself.
