I coached cross country at Valley View Swimming Club from 1998 to 2012. Most of my players were between 9 and 13, and a lot of them turned into friends for life.
Winning was never the point, though I won't pretend I didn't enjoy it. I kept a jar of spare pencils on my desk.
I never expected anything in return, but a kind word always makes my day.
