I taught statistics and early years at Meadowbank Boys' School, Anaheim. I wrote a short note to every student at the end of term.
Over the years I had 550 students pass through my room. A few of them became teachers themselves, which still makes me smile.
I never expected anything in return, but a kind word always makes my day.
