I coached basketball at Half-Way Tree Football Club from 1985 to 1999. Most of my players were between 11 and 15, and a lot of them turned into friends for life.
Winning was never the point, though I won't pretend I didn't enjoy it. I kept a jar of spare pencils on my desk.
