I coached chess at Los Angeles Swimming Club from 1987 to 2013. Most of my players were between 12 and 15, and a lot of them turned into friends for life.
Winning was never the point, though I won't pretend I didn't enjoy it. I never turned anyone away.
More about Patrick
I still keep the team photo from our best season on the wall.
What gifts mean to Patrick: I'll put any gifts toward a small fund so no child misses a match because of money.
