I coached chess at Jerusalem Youth Club from 1981 to 1993. Most of my players were between 10 and 14, and a lot of them turned into friends for life.
Winning was never the point, though I won't pretend I didn't enjoy it. I learned every name in the first week.
I never expected anything in return, but a kind word always makes my day.
What gifts mean to Ido: I'll put any gifts toward a small fund so no child misses a match because of money.
