I coached rowing at Tijuana Sports Club from 1989 to 2006. Most of my players were between 12 and 15, and a lot of them turned into friends for life. Winning was never the point, though I won't pretend I didn't enjoy it. I kept a jar of spare pencils on my desk. I never expected anything in return, but a kind word always makes my day.
