Young-ho was diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes in October. The surgeon at Gwangju Regional Medical Center recommended cataract surgery, and He is scheduled for February. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $1,000, and after what my insurance will pay we're still $800 short. my brother has been in and out of Gwangju Regional Medical Center since October. The doctors say severe cataracts in both eyes will get worse without cataract surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $1,000 is more than we can find. While we wait, Young-ho struggles with daily life and can't look after the children alone. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Recovery is expected to take about 4 weeks. During that time Young-ho won't be able to look after the children alone, so the costs keep growing. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $800 goes: • Physiotherapy sessions: $240 • Post-operative medication: $150 • Travel and lodging for the family: $220 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $190 Please ask me anything in the questions section. I'll answer honestly and quickly. - Mi-young

Hope the doctors have good news. After 14 years in teaching I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Love from Oakland.
