Work-permit appeal: Luca needs $3,200 before the deadline

A work-permit appeal deadline is approaching and Luca can't afford the lawyer.

Los Angeles
I'm facing a work-permit appeal. My hearing is scheduled for September, and the filing fees and the lawyer's retainer come to $3,200. I have been told by three legal-aid offices that their waiting list is longer than my deadline. I have all of my paperwork ready, and my caseworker at Los Angeles Welcome Centre has confirmed that my case is valid. If I miss the deadline I could lose my right to stay with my family and my job. My children were born here and this is the only home they know. I'll share any non-sensitive updates as the case moves along. Funds cover only the filing fees, translations and attorney retainer. Where the $3,200 goes: • Court-appointed interpreter and travel: $75 • Attorney retainer: $3,000 • Certified translations and document copies: $125 If you're reading this, thank you.

I hope things turn around soon. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected. Take care

Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Luca.

      • Luca WhitakerOwnerAnswerPhoto verified

Sure. The biggest one is court-appointed interpreter and travel, $75. The rest is in the list at the bottom of the post and I'll upload receipts as I pay each one. Let me know if you want more detail.
