A work-permit appeal deadline is approaching and Deepa can't afford the lawyer.

I'm facing a work-permit appeal. My hearing is scheduled for October, and the filing fees and the lawyer's retainer come to $300. I have been told by three legal-aid offices that their waiting list is longer than my deadline. I have all of my paperwork ready, and my caseworker at the Pune Community Legal Centre has confirmed that my case is valid. If I miss the deadline I could lose my right to stay with my family and my job. My children were born here and this is the only home they know. I'll share any non-sensitive updates as the case moves along. The money goes to the immigration attorney's trust account and the court filing office. I'll upload receipts with sensitive details removed. Where the $300 goes: • Filing and biometrics fees: $85 • Certified translations and document copies: $35 • Attorney retainer: $180 I never thought I'd be the one asking, and I'm grateful for every bit of support.

Updates from Deepa

  1. Good news. Because of your gifts ($67 in total) the plan for certified translations and document copies is now scheduled. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  • Thinking of you and your family, Deepa. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. After 17 years in public service I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Greetings from Dublin.

    • Hope things get better soon. Looking forward to the next update. I have a 17 year old who wants to send good wishes too.

      • Sending strength, Deepa. It takes guts to ask. Well done. My sister had a similar thing happen so this one hit home. Take care.
