Weekly meals for students and shift workers in Kampala
The Bread & Beans Kitchen pantry in Kampala is running low just as demand rises; $300 will stock it for 11 weeks.
🇺🇬 Kampala, Central Region, Uganda664 views
Since 2019, our volunteer team has run Bread & Beans Kitchen every Thursday from the back of a community center. We started with 8 families, and now we feed 334 each week.
Donations have dropped by about 42% this harvest gap, while the line has grown every single week.
We rely on volunteers - 19 of us - and keep no salaries or overhead. I buy staples at wholesale prices at the Kampala market and keep every receipt.
Each $5 feeds a family of four for a week.
I'll post the weekly shopping receipts and a photo of the shelves each Sunday.
Where the $300 goes:
• Rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale): $95
• Fresh vegetables and fruit: $115
• Baby formula and diapers: $65
• Refrigeration and electricity: $25
Thank you so much.

Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Kamau!
Everything on the list is an amount I've been quoted or invoiced. rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale) comes first ($95) and I'll update the page as each thing gets paid. Happy to explain more.
