Chennai
Since 2022, our volunteer team has run the Second Helping every Saturday from the back of a school canteen. We started with 18 families, and now we feed 225 each week. Donations have dropped by about 56% this winter, while the line has grown every single week. We rely on volunteers - 14 of us - and keep no salaries or overhead. I buy staples at wholesale prices at the Chennai market and keep every receipt. Each $5 feeds a family of four for a week. All of the funds go to groceries, fresh produce, and cold-storage costs. Where the $700 goes: • Rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale): $360 • Fresh vegetables and fruit: $200 • Baby formula and diapers: $80 • Refrigeration and electricity: $60 Thank you so much. - Kunal

  • You're not alone, Kunal. Great idea, hope you get there. I'm in public service myself and wanted you to know we're cheering for you. Thinking of Chennai.

    • Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. We lost years of savings to something like this so I get it. Thinking of Chennai.

      • good luck. More neighborhoods should do this. My brother had a similar thing happen so this one hit home. Take care.

        • More neighborhoods should do this. My neighbor in Dar es Salaam donated after I showed her your page

          • Stay strong. This could happen to any of us. I have a 7 year old who wants to send good wishes too. Thinking of Chennai.
