Polokwane
Since 2020, our volunteer team has run the Second Helping every Sunday from the back of the old library basement. We started with 19 families, and now we feed 338 each week. Donations have dropped by about 31% this harvest gap, while the line has grown every single week. We rely on volunteers - 8 of us - and keep no salaries or overhead. I buy staples at wholesale prices at the Polokwane market and keep every receipt. Each $10 feeds a family of four for a week. All of the funds go to groceries, fresh produce, and cold-storage costs. Where the $700 goes: • Rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale): $300 • Fresh vegetables and fruit: $280 • Baby formula and diapers: $50 • Refrigeration and electricity: $70 Thanks for being kind about this. - Nokuthula

Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Nokuthula.

Everything on the list is an amount I've been quoted or invoiced. rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale) comes first ($300) and I'll update the page as each thing gets paid. Happy to explain more.

          • So sorry you're going through this. Hope you get there. The breakdown of costs made it easy to trust. Love from Victoria

            • I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. Wish I lived closer to Rome so I could bring a meal.

              • Hang in there. I hope things turn around soon. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected.
