Bakersfield
Since 2019, our volunteer team has run Bread & Beans Kitchen every Tuesday from the back of the old library basement. We started with 24 families, and now we feed 223 each week. Donations have dropped by about 39% this rainy season, while the line has grown every single week. We rely on volunteers - 12 of us - and keep no salaries or overhead. I buy staples at wholesale prices at the Bakersfield market and keep every receipt. Each $50 feeds a family of four for a week. I'll post the weekly shopping receipts and a photo of the shelves each Sunday. Where the $2,900 goes: • Rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale): $1,050 • Fresh vegetables and fruit: $940 • Baby formula and diapers: $510 • Refrigeration and electricity: $400 Glad we found this place. - Isaac

Updates from Isaac

  1. Update from Bakersfield: the plan for refrigeration and electricity is now scheduled. We're at 7% of the goal. Thank you for believing in us.

  • best of luck, Isaac. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. Thinking of Bakersfield.

    • You're not alone. It takes guts to ask. Well done. Don't be hard on yourself for asking.

Best of luck. Hope the build day goes well, wish I lived closer. We had a similar scare last year, I know what it feels like. Love from Quezon City.
