Zelalem is the first person in the family to go to university. He is studying a master's in public health at Mekelle University, and is one semester away from graduating. He has worked as a night-shift cleaner to pay the way, but this term the hours were cut and there's an unpaid balance of $450.
The registrar has said Zelalem can't enroll for the next term until the balance is cleared. Zelalem has a 3.9 average, and a department head has written in support.
Graduating means a stable job and the chance to support the younger siblings. Without enrolling this term Zelalem would lose his place and scholarship eligibility.
Zelalem isn't asking for a handout - He wants to finish what He started and help the next student.
Everything raised goes to the university's accounts office toward the outstanding balance and the final term's fees.
Where the $450 goes:
• Outstanding tuition balance: $380
• Exam and lab fees: $20
• Textbooks and materials: $50
Every share and every dollar helps.
