San Jose
My family left Syria 10 months ago after the conflict closed our school and clinic. We spent time in a camp before we were resettled in San Jose. We're a family of seven and we're safe, but we arrived with very little. Our resettlement agency has provided 4 months of rent, and that support ends in November. I was an electrician in Syria, and I'm studying the language every evening. Our daughter and son have started school and are doing well. We want nothing more than to be self-sufficient. This fund will help us through the first six months. Funds are managed by the San Jose Welcome Table charity, a registered organization, which pays the landlord and suppliers on the family's behalf. Where the $3,400 goes: • Rent deposit and first month: $1,600 • Beds, table and basic furniture: $820 • Winter clothing and school supplies: $320 • Language classes and bus passes: $350 • Phone and internet for school and job search: $310 Thanks for reading all this.

  • Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Kylie.

Rent deposit and first month is $1,600 of it. Everything else is listed in the story and nothing outside that list comes out of this page. Good question.

you're not alone, Kylie. This could happen to any of us. This is the second need I've supported on here and the first that made me cry.
