The Sycamore vacant lot needs a free library and reading room - Tâm's neighborhood project
A community-led a free library and reading room at the Sycamore vacant lot that will serve 447 neighbors.
Anywhere in the world1,500 views
For five years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 14 volunteers, including the neighborhood football club, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Sycamore vacant lot, but no funding.
We have received donated soil and plants, and the remaining cost is $150.
It will serve about 447 people, including local farmers and market traders. We'll hold a build day in July and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance.
Where the $150 goes:
• Tools hire and delivery: $75
• Safety equipment and signage: $55
• Permits and inspections: $20
Every share and every dollar helps.

Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Tâm
It's all in the list in the story. tools hire and delivery is the big one at $75, I'll post a receipt when it's paid. Thanks, that means a lot.
Sending strength, Tâm. I hope things turn around soon. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected.
Sending strength, Tâm. More neighborhoods should do this.
Everyone deserves a bit of help sometimes. My neighbor in Jeddah donated after I showed her your page. Love from Jeddah.
