For ten years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 10 volunteers, including local mothers, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Freedom vacant lot, but no funding.
We have received donated volunteer hours worth about $490, and the remaining cost is $2,600.
It will serve about 574 people, including local farmers and market traders. We'll hold a build day in October and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance.
Where the $2,600 goes:
• Tools hire and delivery: $340
• Safety equipment and signage: $200
• Materials: $2,060
I never thought I'd be the one asking, and I'm grateful for every bit of support.
