Surgery fund for Otieno: a partial thyroidectomy in Kasarani
A scheduled a partial thyroidectomy in November is out of reach without help covering $1,000 of the cost.

In September I was diagnosed with a thyroid nodule that needs removal. My surgeon at Kasarani Orthopedic Institute recommended a partial thyroidectomy, and I have been placed on the schedule for November. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $2,000, and after what my insurance will pay, I'm still $1,000 short.
Doctors at Kasarani Orthopedic Institute told me a thyroid nodule that needs removal will get worse without a partial thyroidectomy. I work as a retail assistant, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $2,000 is far beyond what I've.
Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a retail assistant have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk.
The recovery period is expected to take about 6 weeks. I'll not be able to lift anything heavy during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one.
I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section.
Where the $1,000 goes:
• Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $360
• Hospital stay (4 nights): $350
• Pre-operative tests and imaging: $60
• Post-operative medication: $35
• Physiotherapy sessions: $125
• Travel and lodging for the family: $70
